ANATOMY LESSON Understanding the stats you’ll fi nd on your trading cards

summoning monsters? If so, the Dragon Ball Super Card Game might be more your speed. It features characters and powers from not just Dragon Ball Super, but all of the franchise’s countless series, and a unique play-style refl ecting the world-shattering battles of the shows. Each deck is built around a Leader, their allies, and ‘Extra’ cards that activate powerful abilities – so, for example, your strategy might centre on Goku, but allow you to summon the likes of Vegeta and Goten, and deploy the Kamehameha, Afterimage Technique, and more.

Ball games As with Yu-Gi-Oh, your best fi rst step is

to pick up a starter deck. Dark Invasion is a great choice, featuring 51 cards (fi ve of them exclusive to the set), the rules, and a playsheet. It’s themed around the Dark Demon Realm Saga from Dragon Ball Heroes, and features Bardock the Masked Saiyan as its Leader, with Trunks, Mira, and more all included alongside. From there, you’ve got loads of

boosters to choose from, but we’d recommend starting with some Miraculous Revival packs to kick off your collection. This set is based around the wish-granting powers of the dragon Shenron, evoking classic moments from throughout the franchise and introducing new mechanics to the game – perfect for spicing up your starter deck. And there are many more TCGs

besides, each with their own themes, style of play, and mountain of cards to collect – including, of course, the long-running and beloved Pokémon TCG (you can read all about its latest releases over the page!). But whether you’re fi ring off ki blasts, throwing Poké Balls, or summoning the Blue Eyes White Dragon, there’s a whole world of collecting and tabletop gaming out there waiting for you to get stuck into.

Typically cards require some kind of ‘mana’ or ‘energy’ to play, with more powerful cards taking more to deploy.

This card is from Dragon Ball Super, but many of its features are common to other trading card games.

In most TCGs, your cards represent monsters or warriors summoned to the battlefi eld to fi ght against your opponent.

Each card has its own special rules, giving it a unique role in the game. Carefully combining these abilities is the key to winning.

A card’s stats determine how powerful it is at attacking, and in some games how many hits it can take before it’s destroyed or KO’d.

Diff erent cards have diff erent rarities,

indicating how likely you are to fi nd them in a booster pack, and this will usually be marked on it somewhere.
