ON THE COVER | Anthem

The

Interview

Director Jonathan Warner reveals all

On Anthem’s setting... We wanted it to be a high-mobility action game. We landed on this idea it would be cool to have a suit that would give you all sorts of heroic powers. And that’s where the ideas started to fl ow thinking about this hyper-dangerous world.

On psychic powers… The people have created this ability to communicate with each other mentally, and those who were most apt at that were trained as Cyphers. A Cypher is that person in your head when you’re out on a mission who’s talking to you.

On unlocking Javelins… We make you start with the Ranger and go through the tutorial process so that you understand how to play the game. But then we leave it up to you to toy with it. In fairly short order you’ll have all of them unlocked.

On cosmetic items… We want to make sure that you can apply the style that you want to your Javelin, make it completely yours, make it as cool or as funky as you want it to be, and have that divorced from how powerful you are.

On maximum team size… Currently a team of four is the max. You can play with less than that, all the way down to playing by yourself if you choose, but right now four is the max for your squad.

On his choice of Javelin… Right now the Storm is my current favourite, it really plays into my personal gameplay style. I like how it looks, I like its powers. It’s my favourite!
