Switching gears If you’ve come across a gaming
keyboard before, you’ve likely heard mention of the term ‘key switch’. Switches are responsible for the feel and performance of any given keyboard, with certain classes of key switch touted as more favourable for gaming than others. But that’s not all that
makes a gaming keyboard tick. Media controls are vital
for mid-game audio tweaks, and ergonomics has a crucial role in
choosing the best board, too. There’s also the matter of RGB lighting: a helping hand for when you want to play late into the night, or if you just want to light up your desk like a dodgy nightclub.
CLICKING INTO PLACE Understanding the ins and outs of the three kinds of key switch
Linear switches Marked by their smooth and uninterrupted travel, linear switches are often touted as the best choice for gamers. That’s mostly thanks to their signature responsiveness and rapid-fi re action. By far the most popular of all linear switches is the much-lauded Cherry MX Red switch.
Tactile switches This switch is punctuated by an inaudible bump midway through a key press. While originally intended for typists, gamers have found these switches complement gaming pretty darn well, too. There are heaps of tactile switches on the market, each with a diff erent take on the formula.
Clicky switches These switches produce a sharp, audible click midway through every key press. While they’re usually favoured by typists rather than gamers, the thunderously loud clickety clack of these keys make them seriously satisfying for any usage. Spare a thought for nearby eardrums, though.
