PLAY | The Outer Worlds

Worlds apart 1 This isn’t a game that takes itself too seriously. Hence the fi nger- guns. 2 The vibrant setting is a nice change from the cold sci-fi futures depicted in many games. 3 Conversations can be resolved through kindly or threatening words, or degenerate into combat.

SHOOT FOR THE STARS

Show the galaxy who’s boss with this sci-fi arsenal

Revolver A Wild West classic reinvented for a new frontier. If it ain’t broke, don’t fi x it.

There are two planets to explore in The Outer Worlds – one fairly developed, the other raw and wild, both spinning away in the Halcyon Star System.

Out of this world This being an Obsidian project, the

breadth of the game world isn’t as important as the depth of interactions you can have within it. Bespoke character development, compelling moral conundrums and the option to shoot, sneak, or speak your way out of trouble are the hooks designed to keep you engaged in this pulp sci-fi landscape. As you level up, you gain Perks that let

you specialise in everything from trading, to chatter, to fi sticuff s. But you can also have Flaws, which you pick up based on your experiences. So if you get in a lot of

scraps with the indigenous Raptidon creatures, you can get Raptiphobia, which makes you weaker to their attacks. In exchange, you get to counterbalance this with a free Perk. Expect heaps of similar micro-decisions throughout the game, as you mould your character and story around your actions. And while combat may play out in

fi rst-person fi refi ghts, this isn’t a frantic shoot-’em-up. At the tap of a button you can enter a VATS-like mode in which time slows and you can pick targets at your leisure – or just titter at vanquished enemies as they fall over in slo-mo. Obsidian may be adored for their work

on Fallout, but this is more than just an homage. It’s decades of role-playing experience coming together to bring you one unforgettable adventure.

Scythe Dripping with glowing… energy… stuff , this melee weapon is seriously deadly.

Electricity gun 97% of enemy guards agree – thunderbolts and lightning are very, very frightening.
