claustrophobia. Its tale of post-nuclear survivors fi ghting mutants and each other in the painfully cramped darkness of the Moscow underground has given us some of the most atmospheric fi rst-person shooters in gaming. Now its latest entry,

A

Metro Exodus, is bringing its hero Artyom out into the (not quite) fresh air, as he boards an armoured locomotive to travel through the ruins of a devastated Russia. It’s a massive shift for the series, not just in terms of the new perspective it off ers on Metro’s setting, but in how much bigger and more open to exploration its levels have become. “The change of tonality was kind of

risky but necessary,” says the game’s writer, Dmitry Glukhovsky. “Just how long can you stay locked in the subway? You can’t stay there forever. You want to do something bigger.”

cross two games and two remasters, the Metro series has shown us the true meaning of

Not just a key fi gure in shaping the

stories of all of the Metro games to date, Glukhovsky is also the author of the books they’re based on. In fact, he began writing the original Metro 2033 when he was just a teenager, before posting it online in 2002.

Tunnel vision But despite his role as primary

architect of the franchise, Glukhovsky is clearly a keen collaborator. Where some might be precious or protective of the world they’ve created, Glukhovsky is quick to emphasise the role of developers 4A Games in crafting Exodus’ story. “I would say that this is a

complete collaboration plot-wise,” he

explains. “They actually came up with the original idea of an armoured train travelling across Russia, so I decided to suggest locations, the communities that populate these locations, and the overall storyline. They told me what kind of characters they wanted to have on board, and I created those for them.”

Glukhovsky’s written three bestselling novels that explore the world of Metro in even greater depth
