3 DAYS GONE

A man, a motorbike, and the biggest hordes of zombies you’ve ever seen

W

e fi nd it a little worrying that so many games think there are zombies in our future.

Do videogame developers know something we don’t? Erm, apart from how to make videogames, of course. Well, at least if the creators of Days Gone are right, we’ll get a sweet motorcycle to make us feel better. In the world of Days Gone, a

disease has raced across the world, claiming countless victims – like disco fever in the 1970s. Most people died from the disease but, in another similarity to disco fever, millions of people who caught it ended up losing their minds and taking on a disturbing appearance. In this instance, however, it’s less partying and unfortunate outfi ts, more cannibalism and loss of humanity. You’ll step into the worn boots of biker

Deacon St John, exploring the open world both on foot and on his sweet hog. While Deacon will meet (and, indeed, fi ght) unfriendly humans on his travels, the main appeal is surely facing off against the hordes of ‘Freakers’ (that’s what Days Gone calls its zombies). Rest

assured, this won’t just be a simple case of carving your way through enemies until you get bored.

Crowd control Freakers congregate in huge, extremely

dangerous numbers. Most of the time, running in to tackle them head-on is a recipe for disaster. You’ll need to fi nd inventive ways to thin out their numbers, distract them, set them on human enemies… or simply sneak past carefully enough to avoid being torn to tough, manly biker shreds. It’s a shame that Days

Gone’s world is now crammed full of things ready to kill you on sight,

as it looks a beautiful, intricate setting to wander around in. There are mountains to climb, rivers to wade

through, caves to explore, and even a day-night cycle with dynamic lighting to match. Weather eff ects further enhance the sense of place, and these even aff ect the Freakers – rain dampens sound, making it easier to sneak past them, the cold that comes with snowfalls makes them stronger, and their numbers swell at night. So much for a quiet road trip.

Freak show 1 The apocalypse is no excuse to let your beard go untrimmed. 2 Use Freaker hordes to your advantage by luring them into enemy camps. 3 Legging it may seem cowardly, but sometimes it’s the wisest move.
