1 RAGE 2

Two top studios join forces for an adrenaline-fueled shooter like no other The two pillars of Id-style combat are,

have fun. Rage 2’s post-apocalyptic power fantasy combines the strengths of two iconic developers into one technicolour playground. From Avalanche Studios, creators of

J

Just Cause, comes an open world primed to explode into chaos at a moment’s notice. From Id Software, creators of 2016’s Doom reboot, comes some of the most brutal, mobile, and satisfying combat in modern gaming. As you explore Rage 2’s

sprawling wasteland, you’ll fi nd yourself tangling with raiders, mutants, super-soldiers, and more. “We wanted to make the world feel alive and reactive, like things are happening even if you are not part of it,” explains Tim Willits, studio director at Id. During our hands-on, we stumble across a gas station barricaded by bandits. Within seconds we’re in a manic fi refi ght, zipping our way through their ranks like a wasp with a shotgun while fuel tanks burst into fl ames all around us.

ust because civilisation has been wiped out by an asteroid collision, doesn’t mean you can’t

Willits explains, “movement as off ence and defence” – here taking the form of a generous run speed, responsive dash, and bounding jump – and “powerful, over-the-top weapons”. The latter comes in the form not just of an arsenal of brilliantly weird guns, but in an array of superpowers, including a ground slam, a throwable black hole, and a telekinetic blast. “They all encourage you to get in close,” says Willits. “Even our guns are very eff ective in close. There’s no cover, no hiding in Rage 2.”

Tale spin Even the story seems

totally off -the-wall. In our time with the game, we meet characters called Glisten Success

and Berserk Boborygmus, help to block

a bombastic political coup, try to get famous on a gruesome gameshow, and fi ght mutants in giant baby masks. In other words, this ain’t your grandad’s fi rst-person shooter. It’s rare that such a packed, open game is as tight to control as this – if the two development studios can stick the landing, this really will be the best of both worlds.

Boom town 1 These are Goons, anarchic punk bandits who don’t like you very much. 2 In awe at the size of this lad. Absolute unit. 3 Even the characters who are on your side are a pretty odd bunch.
