1 DEATH STRANDING
Save humanity by bridging gaps between mountains and people
Format PS4 | Release date 08 November | Publisher Sony | Developer Kojima Productions W
hales are dying on the shores, the sky is grey and angry, and something
invisible stirs among the trees. Sinister apparitions and violent separatists stalk your every move. But, beneath its harsh exterior, Death Stranding is a game about making connections. It’s the latest project from Hideo
Kojima, the creator of the Metal Gear Solid series. The legendary auteur describes Death Stranding as “a completely new type of action game”, one that fuses elements of open- world exploration and intense stealth gameplay before tossing a heap of Hollywood talent and some weird pod babies into the mix. But if all that seems a bit cryptic, we
do know that you’ll play as Sam Bridges as he journeys across the ruins of America on a quest to reconnect the fractured remnants of society. Beautifully rendered snowbanks, dense marshlands, and treacherous mountain slopes are the initial obstacles, but fortunately Sam proves to be a consumate survivor. Crags can be scaled with the help of his
climbing anchors and rope, while handy extendable ladders can be deployed to ascend slopes and cross rivers.
Beach bodies But don’t expect to spend the entirety of
the game wandering these picturesque landscapes unaccosted. Murderous separatist factions travel from city to city, killing with abandon, and it’s up to you whether to stand your ground or sneak your way to safety. And then there’s the
Beached Things (BTs for short). These horrifying spectral beings seem to have washed up on the shore of our world from some other side. Once they detect your presence, there’s no
reasoning with them – they’ll just chase
you down and drag you into oblivion. There’s also an online multiplayer
component that’s so far only been hinted at, with Kojima claiming that you’ll “create new bonds” with other players. Given the game’s emphasis on bridging gaps, it’s obviously going to be vital – the main character is called Sam Bridges, for crying out loud.
