he Call of Duty games are the closest most of us will get to warfare, but while the creators
strive for authenticity, there’s a world of difference between a videogame and real-life combat. You can’t just quit military service from a menu, after all. That’s why the game-makers are giving back by way of the Call of Duty Endowment – a scheme that helps ex-forces personnel into quality jobs in the civilian world. “Call of Duty is
entertainment and the military is reality, but I think it’s a very symbiotic relationship,” says Dan Goldenberg, executive director of the Endowment and himself a US Navy veteran. “Deployed service members are out there playing the game, so it’s something they relate to. On the flipside, I know from our development studios
that service members inspire them, and developers are always happy to give back and find ways to support them.”
Care package Activision’s biggest contribution to the
Endowment is a “sizeable” donation that covers all the operating costs. “So literally every cent that comes through the Endowment goes into these programmes,” explains Goldenberg. But the link goes much
deeper than that. Call of Duty players can directly support the Endowment’s work by buying specific
in-game items, and Activision donate 100% of the proceeds they
receive from these digital purchases to these charitable endeavours. So, the next time you board the chopper and drop into a round of Blackout in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, you could be helping the
