3 DYING LIGHT 2

An expansive zombie-infested sequel that wants you to choose your own path

Format PS4, XO, PC | Release date Spring 2020 | Publisher Techland | Developer Techland F

ollowing the huge and enduring success of the first Dying Light, it’s not surprising that developers

Techland have approached this sequel with plenty of ambition. The team’s expanding the core formula – first- person combat and parkour across a zombie-infested city that turns deadly at night – by adding deep narrative choices that have lasting consequences in the new post- apocalyptic setting. “15 years have passed

since [the zombie outbreak] and humanity has all but lost its war against the virus,” says lead game designer Tymon Smektala. “That time period allows us to more fully explore the impact this virus has had on humanity. We were also looking at ways to make our game stand out more, and the unique setting of the Modern Dark Ages is our answer to that.”

Faction man It’s a world of warring factions, ranging

from the survivalist Scavengers to the authoritarian Peacekeepers. Choices

made over the course of the story – for example, who controls supplies of running water – will cause some groups to rise and others to fall, changing the lives of the people around you. “Our biggest risk is betting more on

narrative but this is a lesson we learned during the production of the first game,” explains Smektala. “We realised we created this emergent open-world game, very sandbox-y, but it felt constrained by the story which made those big decisions for the player, sometimes against their will. That’s why we’re introducing a completely different take on story this time around – the non- linear narrative and

gameplay systems around it

aim to give you as much freedom It’s a big change that’s evolved out of

in gameplay as in narrative.”

the relationship Techland have had with their players since the first Dying Light. “We’re in constant contact with our

community and I think we have a good handle on what they want to see,” says Smektala. “I think they’re going to like what we have in store.”

Land of the dead 1 This time, zombies almost exclusively come out at night, hiding inside when the sun is up. “Exploring these buildings during the day is not for the faint- hearted,” Smektala warns. 2 “You may find that the worst monsters in this world are not the infected…” teases Smektala. 3 That’s not a knife. This, is a knife.
