PLAY | Doom Eternal 1

2

3 DOOM ETERNAL

Nostalgic nods to the past with extra gore? Sounds like a hell of a game

Format PS4, XO, Switch, PC | Release date 22 November Publisher Bethesda Softworks | Developer id Software

W

hen this Stygian sequel first stomped onto our radar, we had just one concern. The

developers of 2016’s Doom reboot were wickedly meticulous in recreating the bloodthirsty spirit of the 1993 original. How do you follow a game that reinvented one of the most revered shooters ever made? Judging from our

hands-on, Doom Eternal’s answer is ‘more’. Sometimes, a hell of a lot more. On the surface level, that means reintroducing a number of the enemies and weapons that Doom II did back in 1994. It’s a thrill to see the once-familiar face of a Pain Elemental spewing Lost Souls, but the dynamic bodily mutilation tech that sees our bullets strip the scaly flesh from its bones is entirely new. It sounds gratuitous, but the action’s so

relentless that you’ve little time to dwell on the gory details. And the developers haven’t spent all their time on meat and gristle – there’s also a renewed focus on the environments you’ll be blasting

through. “Making the levels just as fun and engaging as the combat was something we really wanted,” says executive producer Marty Stratton. In our demo, we use the Super

Shotgun’s grappling hook, careful double jumps, and a midair dash to hop between the floating rocks of Phobos before landing in an angry cluster of Hell Knights and Arachnotrons and opening fire.

Gory days With a host of nimble

new traversal abilities, an even more aggressive

arsenal, and twice as many

demons to rip and tear your way through, it’s easy to believe Stratton

when he tells us that the team have “left no stone unturned when it comes to pushing the combat, the level design, and the epic scale of this world further.” But Doom Eternal is better described

by sounds than words – a throat-tearing roar that shatters space rocks. It’s hard to imagine another 2019 shooter standing up to its unholy energy.
