How the makers of The Witcher 3 have raised their game for Cyberpunk 2077


H


ow do you follow up a game like The Witcher 3? CD Projekt Red’s roleplaying epic has sold


more than 20 million copies, scooped dozens of Game of the Year awards, and earned a place in the pantheon of videogame greats. But now, with Cyberpunk 2077, the Polish development studio is attempting something even more ambitious. That means an even bigger,


more detailed setting – by contrast to the pastoral countryside and cobblestone towns of Geralt’s world, the futuristic metropolis of Night City seems impossibly dense. It means even more choice, not just in what you can do, but in who you are. And it means a dash of serious star power, in the form of Hollywood legend Keanu Reeves. The star plays an AI ‘ghost’ who


communicates with you via a chip in your head, offering a running commentary on your missions. He’s your companion on a first-person adventure through a bleak, dystopian society ruled by corporations, where people are defined by their ‘cyberware’,


mechanical augmentations surgically inserted into their bodies.


Witch way? In some ways it’s an even grimmer


world than The Witcher’s, but it’s also one that gives you far more power to choose your own way via its sprawling RPG systems and elaborate quest design. You chose Geralt’s actions, but he was largely a fixed personality – your Cyberpunk 2077 hero is yours to shape utterly. “Based on how you


develop your character, or what origin you picked for your character, it impacts the narrative and the ways you can play through the game,” says quest director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz. “If you


invest a lot into, for example, specialising in hacking, you have a


lot of devices that will allow you to get through the levels more efficiently or unlock some specific paths. But the same goes for investing a lot in your strength and being able to breach doors and things like that.” The levels themselves are packed


with possibilities – toyboxes full of ways to overcome your opponents. Hack into
