Interview

Narrative lead Aaron Contreras on bringing Cal’s story to life

On cinematic inspirations… In narrative, we’re looking to A New Hope to be our lodestone for everything that we’re building. We watch all the TV shows, we read all the books, we have respect for all things Star Wars, but in the narrative side, at least, A New Hope is our reference for what it means to be Star Wars.

On working with Lucasfilm… They’ve been involved every step of the way. Every piece of concept art, every game design, every story ingredient, every script goes through them – every piece of music, as well. They were there to really be our creative partners and make sure that what we’re doing is authentically Star Wars.

On player choice… We’re on pretty tight rails in terms of story choice in this game, but we wanted to allow the ability for the player and Cal to give their opinion about something a companion character says or an event that’s happened in the story, and then pay that back later on. Conversation choices in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will allow you to colour your experience of the game, but it’s not going to result in a different endgame or a majorly different experience.

On turning to the dark side… The game has no dark side temptation, and no light-dark Force meter. The future could hold anything, but for this story and this game, we’re telling the story of somebody who is the light of hope, standing against the Dark Times and the Empire.
